The imminent closure of the Giant Eagle supermarket and pharmacy in North Versailles has sparked reactions from regular customers shocked by the sudden news. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, the supermarket that has served the community for four decades off Lincoln Highway will cease operations on May 31, leaving patrons to find alternatives at least three miles away.
Residents like Michelle and John Smeltzer, who, even after relocating to White Oak, continued using the North Versailles Giant Eagle as their pharmacy of choice. "To stop in here and get something is easy," Michelle Smeltzer conveyed her convenience, and the sense of loss was evident when she received a text about the closing. "It's sad," she added, as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh. John Smeltzer expressed his hope that the company would improve services at the White Oak pharmacy, where he noted, "the line’s backed up and everything." Consequently, Giant Eagle has assured that employees interested in continuing their work will be offered positions at neighboring locations.
WTAE's report highlighted the community's dismay, particularly among the elderly, who may find it troubling to travel further distances for grocery needs. "They don’t want to be traveling," shopper Susan Blake stressed the convenience factor that the local Giant Eagle provided. Echoing this sentiment, Diane Lavender worried about the elderly shoppers, questioning, "I mean the elderly, where are they going to go?"
According to CBS News Pittsburgh, Giant Eagle described the closure as a "difficult but necessary" decision in their statement without providing further details.
While Giant Eagle offered no explicit explanation for the closure, patrons are directed toward alternate stores in Braddock Hills, McKeesport, Monroeville, and White Oak for their shopping needs. The pharmacy customers have been advised to have their prescriptions transferred to another Giant Eagle location, ensuring the continuity of their medication supply.
