To tackle the housing crunch, Novato City Council has green-lit a hefty grant for Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco’s (HGSF) ambitious 80-unit affordable housing initiative, coined Habitat Redwood Boulevard. According to an announcement on the City of Novato, the council’s unanimous nod came alongside a welcome package totaling $1 million to assist in fee reductions and waivers, a sum that matches the generous allocation from 2023.
The funds, earmarked to actively help ensure long-term affordability for residents, are sourced from the City’s Affordable Housing Fund. Maureen Sedonaen, Chief Executive Officer at Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, couldn't be more appreciative. She remarked, per the City of Novato, “Their commitment to affordable homeownership is helping working families put down roots in the communities where they live and work. This project will be the largest 100% affordable homeownership development in the state and is a shining example of what is possible when we come together with a shared vision."
The city's announcement further explains that 60 of these homes will cater to the needs of low-income families, while the remaining 20 units are reserved for those with moderate incomes. The development also includes plans for a small commercial space. A selling point of HGSF’s program is its commitment to maintaining total housing payments, including everything from taxes to utilities, not to exceed 30% of a household’s income, ensuring the affordability factor remains steadfast.
In a show of strong backing for the project, Mayor Tim O'Connor told the City of Novato, “This project is a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities for local families.” Meanwhile, HGSF is racing to quickly secure all necessary permits and additional funds to start the construction phase. Once the units are up and standing, they will contribute towards meeting Novato’s Regional Housing Needs Allocation.
