The incident began with Police Officer A.C. Gaulding's routine traffic stop of 33-year-old Brandon White. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, White was initially slow to comply, driving past various potential stopping points before pulling into a driveway. What unfolded next was a dangerous exchange of gunfire that began with White shooting Officer Gaulding in the foot. Gaulding returned fire, moving to cover as White appeared to escalate the situation by grabbing a rifle.
Reinforcements quickly arrived at the scene, providing emergency medical care to White after Officer Gaulding's subsequent shots incapacitated him. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. As the sheriff's office further informed, White was wearing body armor during the shootout, complicating the exchange and emphasizing the precariousness of the encounter.
As with all such critical incidents, the State Attorney’s Office has stepped in to evaluate the legality of Officer Gaulding's actions. "The investigation is ongoing and the culminated findings will determine the next steps" the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office stated in their release. Upon completion of these legal assessments, JSO will additionally conduct its own internal review to ascertain policy adherence followed by deliberations from a Response to Resistance Board, compounding the scrutiny on the incident.
