A quiet morning in east Raleigh was disrupted by gunfire yesterday when a shooting left one person with life-threatening injuries. The Raleigh Police Department reported to CBS 17 that the incident occurred around 10:35 a.m. in the 1100 block of North Rogers Lane at New Bern Avenue. Authorities found a crashed white van off the side of the road, which became the center of the active investigation.
Traffic was redirected as the scene unfolded. Inbound travelers on New Bern Avenue were forced to detour through a shopping center parking lot to Rodgers Lane to be able to access New Bern Avenue again. WRAL News crews noted that the police had cordoned off the intersection with crime scene tape and were managing traffic flow.
The victim was swiftly taken to WakeMed for treatment, said police. As of the most recent updates, no suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. The investigation is actively ongoing, with detectives seeking to determine the events that led to the violent altercation.
Local residents were taken aback by the events, with one such resident, James Moody, telling WRAL, "I was sitting over here, drinking a cup of coffee," and that upon hearing "three gunshots," he found himself unable to "get anywhere." He expressed his shock and concern over the violence, stating, "It's kind of shocking, it really is," and mused on the disturbing frequency of such incidents, asking, "So what do we do about it?"
The investigation continues as law enforcement works to piece together the circumstances of the shooting and to bring those responsible to account. Details will be provided as they become available, with ABC 11 promising to relay the latest developments in this case.
