Last Sunday morning, a devastating incident unfolded as one man perished and another was saved following the crash of a vehicle into the Grand River in Eaton County. According to CBS News Detroit, the mishap was first signaled by an iPhone Crash Notification and an alert from the BMW Response Center at approximately 2:22 a.m.
The Eaton County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police were called to the scene, near the dead end of Jolly Highway. Upon arrival, they were met with the grim sight of a severely damaged guardrail. In the dark waters, about 200 feet from the shore, the submerged taillights of the ill-fated vehicle were visible. In a desperate rescue effort, Troopers commandeered a canoe from a neighboring property to reach the sinking car and search for any passengers, as reported by the Lansing State Journal.
As the troopers paddled towards the vehicle, deputies managed to rescue a man flailing in the water, struggling to reach the safety of the riverbank. This individual was promptly transported to University of Michigan Health – Sparrow Hospital to receive medical attention. Meanwhile, a broad search ensued for another person believed to be missing, with the assistance of a drone using thermal imaging, boats from local fire departments, and search parties combing the area on foot.
The search operation, which included members of the Tri-County Dive Team, culminated tragically when they discovered the body of a 39-year-old man submerged in about 10 feet of water, downstream from the crash site. "At around 8:30 a.m., the dive team found a 39-year-old man’s body a short distance downstream in around 10 feet of water," a statement obtained by WLNS confirmed. The man was pronounced dead, an unfortunate casualty in an incident where alcohol is suspected to have played a factor.
An investigation into the precise circumstances of the crash is actively ongoing. Law enforcement is currently withholding further details as they sift through the clues that morning's tragedy left behind.
