Ahead of an approaching cold front, Orlando and the surrounding east central Florida region brace for a mix of weather conditions over the next few days. According to the National Weather Service Melbourne (NWS Melbourne), the area can anticipate near-critical fire weather conditions, a dabble of coastal showers, and a sharp temperature change. Forecast specialists say breezy days and gusty fronts are on the roster, bringing attention to precautionary measures for outdoor activities.
A weak, dry cold front has made its way through the Florida Peninsula, and northerly winds will become more pronounced, especially along the coast north of Sebastian Inlet. Due to strong longshore currents, the marine conditions, declared 'poor' by the NWS Melbourne, are expected to pose challenges for beachgoers and mariners alike. Inland winds could edge towards creating near Red Flag conditions, raising the significance of fire potential to moderate north of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee County.
While today's forecast remains clear of precipitation, despite some deceptive virga spotted on radar earlier, it’s a short-lived respite with onshore breezes and coastal showers expected as early as Tuesday. The conditions are a prelude to a more potent system rumbling in midweek. "A strong cold front Wednesday afternoon/evening," stated by the National Weather Service, is set to bring increased showers, isolated storm chances, and hazier weather.
As the front moves through, boaters will need to be particularly cautious. From Tuesday onward, southeast winds ramp up, and the choppy seas begin building, peaking at 7-8ft in the Gulf Stream by Thursday. Small Craft Advisories will likely be issued as the front creates hazardous conditions. According to the NWS Melbourne, the hazardous winds Wednesday (20- 25 kts) will persist into Thursday, signaling a clear heads-up for anyone planning marine activities.
Looking toward the tail end of the week, a modicum of normalcy is predicted to return with the weather as high pressure takes the stage once again, bringing drier conditions and cooler temperatures to Orlando residents. A subsequent front is forecasted for the weekend, though its exact timing remains up in the air due to model discrepancies. Regardless, Florida's fluctuating weather patterns remind us that the state is often a place of swift meteorological changes.
