Osceola County has adopted new ceremonial titles for its government leaders in a practical move to strengthen its international and intergovernmental communication. Osceola County's official news release reported that the Board of County Commissioners decided on Monday that the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board would also be known respectively as Mayor and Vice Mayor in certain contexts.
Commissioner Viviana Janer, serving as the current Chairwoman of the Board, highlighted the reason for this update: "Osceola County is a player on the global stage with investments being made in our backyard, particularly at NeoCity," Janer said, per the county's press release. "This ceremonial change simply ensures that when the board is meeting with its counterparts in other states and countries, that the Chair and Vice Chair roles here in Osceola County are universally understood."
This change aims to clarify Osceola's governmental structure, which might be confusing to parties not familiar with the local lexicon. Since its establishment by the County Charter in 1992, Osceola has operated with an Elected Commission and Appointed County Manager system. The newly adopted titles do not amend this structure but provide universally recognized designations for the county's officials when engaged in business dealings beyond their borders.
