In an effort to tackle the growing fentanyl crisis, the City of Palmdale has announced a creative initiative aimed at engaging its younger residents. The Youth Multimedia Fentanyl Awareness Challenge, which is now open for submissions, invites middle and high school students to produce content that spreads the word about the dangers of fentanyl, including original songs, artwork, poetry, or video PSAs.

In a statement obtained by the City's official announcement, Mayor Loa expressed his belief in the youths' ability to raise awareness, saying “Our youth in Palmdale are deeply concerned about the dangers of fentanyl and possess the passion and determination to make a meaningful impact in the fight against fentanyl-related deaths and overdoses.”

With substantial prizes at stake, the participants stand to win not only recognition but also a monetary reward for their efforts. Middle school students could bag up to $400 for the best video PSA, while high school students could see themselves $600 richer for the same category. Further incentives include being featured on the City’s website and YouTube channel for the most impactful submissions.

Adding to the chorus of encouragement, Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt highlighted the extended impact of the young participants' works, placing them in the role of changemakers. She told the City's announcement, “This isn’t just a contest — it’s a chance for our youth to become changemakers in their community.”

Those interested in throwing their creative hats in the ring have until Monday, April 28, to submit their entries. Complete rules and entry guidelines are available on the City of Palmdale’s website.
