An early morning police pursuit in Northridge ended in a multi-vehicle crash on Tuesday. The Los Angeles Police Department stated the chase began around 7:10 a.m. near Darby Avenue and Gresham Street, as officers pursued a gray Acura due to a parole violation. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was taken into custody after the collision at Nordhoff Street and Balboa Boulevard.
It was a pursuit cut shortly by the LAPD, owing to the high speeds reached by the suspect during the chase. According to FOXLA, the suspect was traveling over 100 mph, which prompted the officers to discontinue the pursuit for safety concerns. Shortly after, at approximately 7:11 a.m., the suspect's vehicle then crashed into at least two other vehicles.
The specifics of the crash were not immediately disclosed, but initial reports from the LAPD indicate that two people were transported to the hospital following the incident. Official statements have not yet provided updates on the condition of those injured. The scene of the crash was significantly impacted, with Sky5 footage revealing multiple damaged vehicles and subsequent road closures in both directions at the crash site, as detailed by KTLA. This incident added to the traffic delays as commuters were forced to seek alternate routes.
The sequence of events draws connections to a fatal pursuit crash that occurred less than a day prior in the Inland Empire, where a sheriff's deputy was killed. According to NBC Los Angeles, this deputy was identified as 36-year-old Hector Cuevas. Culpability in that chase has been attributed to Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., who is facing vehicular manslaughter and evasion charges.
Investigations into the Northridge crash remain ongoing, with no further details yet released about the suspect's condition following his arrest or the extent of the damage sustained. Officer Miller from the LAPD reportedly stated that ambulances were called to check out patients at the site.
