PennDOT Unveils $537 Million Roadwork Plan for Pittsburgh: Major Disruptions Anticipated on Route 22/30 and I-79Source: Google Street View

Drivers in the Pittsburgh area can expect a warmer season of disruptions as PennDOT unveils an extensive list of construction plans for the 2025 season, impacting several major roadways. The district's infrastructure has been invested in for a total of $537 million, and substantial attention is being drawn to the Route 22/30 interchange and I-79 at the Route 910 Wexford interchange. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, the reconfiguration of the Route 22/30 interchange into a diverging diamond interchange is designed to "improve safety and traffic flow," PennDOT officials emphasized.

Similarly, the Wexford interchange work aims to alleviate traffic congestion by constructing two new flyover ramps over I-79, as District Executive Jason Zang reported to WTAE. The breadth of work spans three counties, with Allegheny bearing the brunt with 42 projects and Beaver and Lawrence counties seeing further roadway and bridge enhancements. Moreover, a wrong-way detection system on Route 28 is to be introduced with the hope of leveraging technology to prevent such incidents.

While many of these projects are set to commence this summer, some have longer timelines. Notably, work on the "bathtub" section of I-376 in downtown Pittsburgh won't kick off until after the NFL draft in the spring of 2026. In a statement detailed by WTAE, Zang highlighted that this project tackles the persistent issue of flooding and is projected to cost between $30 and $40 million. The endeavor includes upgrades to the pump and pipe systems and fortifying the foundation beneath the roadway.

Additionally, Union Progress reported that of the 57 road and bridge projects PennDOT plans to contract, five major projects will consume over $200 million of the budget, with no other new project exceeding $13 million. These major undertakings contribute to concurrent regional progression despite earlier concerns over winter maintenance problems, potentially curtailing summer paving efforts.

Ongoing constructions are expected to affect traffic on multiple fronts. Route 51 and McKnight Road will face significant impacts, including a crossover on McKnight Road.
