Philadelphia's economic landscape is poised for a shift as Mayor Cherelle L. Parker announced the upcoming departure of Alba Martinez, the current Director of Commerce. Martinez, who has played a key role in shaping policies for Philadelphia's businesses, will be stepping down from her position effective May 1. The news was relayed by the City of Philadelphia's official website.
Setting her sights on a new creative endeavor, Martinez will focus on producing her original musical, "La Guagua 47," which is scheduled for a 2026 premiere in Philadelphia. Described as a unique opportunity by the Mayor, Martinez's commitment to public service will soon dovetail with her passion for the arts. “Alba Martinez has been a true partner in driving our economic opportunity agenda in Philadelphia,” Mayor Parker said in a statement obtained by the city's website. “Her dedication and creativity have laid a strong foundation for inclusive growth throughout our city and its many neighborhoods,” added Parker, highlighting the numerous successful initiatives that Martinez helped to pioneer.
During her tenure, Martinez oversaw a range of economic directives, including the Small Business Catalyst Fund, the Philly Biz Hub, and the expansion of PHL Taking Care of Business. Furthermore, she was instrumental in the inception of the Business Navigator team — efforts underpinning Philadelphia's vision for inclusivity and entrepreneurial vitality. “I am proud of the foundation we’ve built together – from the Small Business Catalyst Fund to the Philly Biz Hub, the expansion of PHL Taking Care of Business, the launch of our Business Navigator team, and more." Martinez told the city's website. "I look forward to staying involved as a member of the city’s business community and a champion of Mayor Parker’s agenda to build a more equitable and prosperous One Philly for all,” Martinez stated, reaffirming her continuous commitment to the cause.
