Attention, Pittsburgh drivers: the Department of Public Works has announced significant lane reductions for the Glenwood Bridge starting March 17. According to a news release on Allegheny County's official website, the bridge has four lanes but will be reduced to one in each direction beginning at 9 a.m. This change is a component of an ongoing preservation project and is expected to last until November 2025.
With daily traffic of approximately 17,497 vehicles, this reduction may lead to significant delays for commuters who traverse the 2,276-foot structure connecting the Hazelwood and Hays neighborhoods. While enduring the inconvenience of repair work, motorists traveling on and near the bridge during these times are urged to use caution. During the pier repairs, drivers might experience traffic delays, inadvertently turned into an obstacle course by the construction work.
This structural enhancement is part of a larger $4.9 million preservation effort executed by Mosites Construction Company, which began the bridge preservation last year. As per the Allegheny County announcement, the 2024 phase included a variety of repairs, from steel and deck fixes to scour and erosion remediation. With a condition rating of 5, deemed 'fair' based on the National Bridge Inspection Standards, these renovations are considered imperative for maintaining its structural integrity.
This phase, now focusing on replacing 11 expansion dams, barrier updates, and pier repairs, aims to solidify the bridge's safety and longevity. As the bridge carries state-owned Route 885 over the Monongahela River, its condition impacts local commuters and binds communities together, necessitating diligent maintenance.
