A Raleigh man, Donnavin Mustafia Byrdsong, has been handed a 16-year sentence for his involvement in trafficking fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. The conviction, publicized on the U.S. Department of Justice website yesterday, came after Byrdsong pled guilty to conspiracy related charges on November 12, 2024. Court documents reveal that Byrdsong, 31, and his affiliates were bringing fentanyl pills into the Raleigh area for distribution. Byrdsong and others in the drug network flew out to California to acquire the narcotics, then shipped them back to North Carolina, hidden ingeniously inside Lego boxes. according to the Justice Department's release.
On January 16, 2024, law enforcement officials intercepted two parcels mailed by Byrdsong from California, directed to an address in Raleigh. Flying from their precincts, the officers seized the 40,000 pills shrewdly concealed in the child's playthings. Further investigation at Byrdsong’s residence led to the discovery of more of these innocuous-looking Lego boxes. It was later confirmed that Byrdsong had history of similarly shipping packages from California, with previous mails confirmed, also housing the dangerous drugs.
The sentencing marks a significant victory for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), whose mandate is to dismantle high-level drug trafficking and criminal organizations posing a threat to the United States. Under the multi-agency, intelligence-driven approach, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies team up to tackle such networks head-on. The case against Byrdsong was investigated by a collaboration of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Raleigh Police Department, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Internal Revenue Service.
U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III pronounced the sentence, with Casey L. Peaden, Assistant U.S. Attorney, leading the prosecution. Meanwhile, Daniel P. Bubar, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced after sentencing was delivered that Byrdsong's sentencing was delivered, a clear message to those undermining public safety through such illicit activities.
