Raleigh commuters, take note: a portion of Hillsborough Street is going under the knife—or more accurately, the wrecking ball—as part of a bridge demolition project. According to a press release from the N.C. Department of Transportation, the demolition will necessitate the closure of eastbound Hillsborough Street between Linday Murphy Drive and Beryl Road.
The street section is set to close just shy of the witching hour this coming Friday and is expected to wrap up by Saturday evening at 6 p.m., pending favorable weather conditions. For those accustomed to cruising through this stretch, it's time to chart a new path. The official detour will reroute traffic via I-440 West to Western Boulevard, then loop back east on I-440 to reconnect with Hillsborough Street.
For those who call the road their daily passage, patience will be as crucial as GPS. Drivers are advised to not only follow the detour signs but to also give themselves some extra time to navigate the changed traffic patterns. In the words of the N.C. Department of Transportation, motorists should be "mindful of crews working and slow down and also allow extra time for their commute."
Given the disruption and the presence of hard-hatted workers amidst the rubble of progress, the usual ebb and flow of Hillsborough Street's traffic will indeed be tested. But like all things, this too is temporary. By tonight, a piece of old Raleigh infrastructure will have made way for future improvements, and the familiar beat of urban life will return to its customary rhythm, albeit with one less bridge to cross.
