The Reno Police Department has recently expanded its K9 unit with the introduction of Bak, a 2-year-old Bohemian Shepherd who specializes in explosive detection and patrol work. Bak was born in the Czech Republic and was transported to Banning, California, where he and Officer Nickel underwent an intensive 6-week training program to prepare for their duties.

According to a Facebook post by the Reno Police Department, Bak has not only been trained to keep communities safe but has also managed to quickly find his place in the department, sharing a love for “Photograph” by Nickelback and the movie "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey." The furry new recruit also looks up to McGruff the crime dog as his hero.

In a statement reflecting the value of K9 officers, Officer Nickel said, "Our K9 Officers are inportant to our investigations as dogs have elevated senses that allow our teams to efficiently solve cases and keep our communities safe. I’m excited to have K9 Bak in our department, and by my side, and looking forward to what we’ll accomplish together in the future."

Bak's arrival to the team reflects the growing use of K9 capabilities in law enforcement. With their heightened senses, K9 officers like Bak assist in detecting explosives and enhancing public safety. Officer Nickel stated that the department plans to utilize Bak’s skills as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain community security.
