After two decades of disuse, the Hartranft Community Center (HCC) in North Philadelphia has flung open its doors once more – courtesy of the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA). This revitalized center, located at 800 W Cumberland Street, now boasts a renovated indoor pool amongst other amenities, providing a renewed space for community engagement and youth development.
The grand reopening event took place on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, kick-starting a new chapter for an establishment that once served as a neighborhood cornerstone. The center, standing on a 60,000-square-foot property inclusive of an adjacent 25,000 square feet managed by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, is poised to be a beacon of hope in the area. The HCC, with its 30,000 square feet spanning two levels, will provide vital services to the community under the governance of a dedicated charter, as reported on the PHA's official website.
Notable attendees who marked the occasion included Kelvin A. Jeremiah, PHA President & CEO; Darrell L. Clarke, PHA Board Member; Malcolm Kenyatta, State Representative; Jeffery Young, Councilmember; Ms. El, 37th Ward Leader, and Keith W. Arrington, Sr., principal of the John F. Hartranft Elementary School.
The rejuvenation of the HCC is a testament to collaborative efforts spanning the course of its closure. The PHA worked closely with community leaders such as the former Council President Darrell L. Clarke and 37th Ward leader, Ms. El to see this project through to fruition. "PHA will provide services at the center," underscored the PHA, highlighting its role in ensuring the center serves the needs and aspirations of the residents it aims to support.
Originally established in 1974, the HCC once served as a vibrant hub for the surrounding community. Its closure left a void that has now been filled with opportunity and space for leisure, learning, and togetherness – essentials for any thriving community.
