As Sacramento continues to grapple with the challenge of homelessness, the City's Incident Management Team (IMT) remains steadily at work, dealing with issues ranging from public calls to waste management. According to a recent report by Sacramento City Express, between February 24 and March 2, the city received 913 calls through their 311 customer service concerning unsheltered individuals. Of these, 689 calls were closed, indicating that the situations were addressed in some manner or, in some cases, the problems had seemingly resolved themselves by the time city staff arrived for inspection.
Not simply fixated on the here and now, the IMT's efforts extend into future prevention and care. During this same period, the City’s Department of Community Response was able to enroll 75 people into databases designed to connect them with shelters and vital services. The City informed, 18 individuals found placement into the City’s specialized facilities – Roseville Road campus and the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC). Yet, spaces remain scarce, with no Pallet homes or trailers available at Roseville Road and only 15 openings at the OEC, as of last Tuesday.
A critical yet often overlooked part of maintaining urban humanity, waste removal, has seen the City clean up a staggering 146,280 pounds of trash in this one-week timeframe. The spotlight placed on these figures serves as a stark reminder of the physical footprint left by crisis, which often reflects the broader failings of society to preemptively and effectively care for its most vulnerable constituents.
For those seeking transparency and progress tracking, the City keeps a regularly updated data dashboard. Here, members of the community can view the week-by-week actions of the IMT since September 2023, including accumulated totals of outreach, compliance, and cleanups. This dashboard serves as both a report card for the City’s efforts and an analytical tool to understand the patterns of this ongoing social crisis. Interested parties can access the dashboard and learn more about the city's comprehensive approach to the issue by visiting Sacramento City Express.
