The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has been doubling down on retail theft with its recent initiative, Operation Smash & Grab. The multi-agency crackdown involved investigators from the Sheriff’s Department – Gangs/Narcotics Division, Rancho Cucamonga Station, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, the California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department. Their efforts have been concentrated throughout San Bernardino County, with a specific focus on shopping districts known to be targeted by organized retail theft crews.
According to the official press release, the operation yielded six felony arrests and 13 misdemeanor arrests, and additionally, $3,527 worth of property was recovered. The upswing in thefts that initiated these measures can be traced back to November 2023, when the county expressed heightened concern for the increasing retail store thefts. These crimes, often executed by mobs employing intimidation tactics, not only terrorize the citizens but also compromise the safety and comfort expected in conventional shopping areas.
The targeted areas of this operation included Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills shopping districts. Investigators utilized a mix of traditional and innovative methods designed to counter the specific strategies utilized by these theft crews. The goal has been to intercept and prevent the activities of these groups, to ultimately reduce the impact of their criminal actions on local businesses and communities.
The funding for this county-wide crime suppression comes from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, which authorized the assistance. The extra financial support is meant to extend the law enforcement services that are tackling quality-of-life issues afflicting the communities. On a legislative level, changes followed with the approval of Proposition 36 on November 5, 2024, which reformed certain laws said to contribute to rising homelessness, drug addiction, and theft. The introduction of the new proposition brought enhanced sentencing for certain offenses and aims to deter criminals by removing the option of immediate cite release prior to court appearances, Proposition 36 was applied to three of the arrests made during the recent Operation Smash & Grab’s two-week sweep.
With the implementation of Proposition 36 and the ongoing efforts of Operation Smash & Grab, the local authorities are signaling a strong commitment to upholding law and order in San Bernardino County's retail spaces. The results of this latest enforcement operation provide insight into the strategy and coordination among different law enforcement agencies in the face of organized retail crime, which continues to be a pressing issue for the region.
