Sarasota residents with thoughts on the proposed extension of the School Avenue Greenway can share their input at an upcoming public meeting. Slated for March 13, the gathering will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at the SRQ Media Studio, located in the City Hall Annex at 1565 1st St. This is a continuation of efforts by the city to offer safer alternatives for pedestrians and cyclists, with the greenway providing a route parallel to U.S. 41 and improving access to Arlington Park, Sarasota High School, and other local hubs.
The extension of the School Avenue Greenway is not a new topic for the locals, appearing on the City's radar in the Capital Improvement Plan and also getting a spotlight in the Sarasota in Motion, the City’s Transportation Master Plan. According to information sourced from a City of Sarasota announcement, the public meeting will feature a presentation from Transportation Planning staff, who have developed potential concepts for the project, taking into account community feedback.
Residents who already shared their opinions through online surveys and during a previous community meeting in November 2024 will now have the opportunity to see these ideas take shape in three project concepts. These include a “do nothing” option for those considering keeping things as, allow participants to review the details closely. During the public meeting when viewing the project boards, they can chat with City staff members about their concerns and questions.
The different concepts on offer reflect the public engagement and are designed to address the community's needs and aspirations for their city's infrastructure. "During the public meeting, Transportation Planning staff will give a presentation showcasing concepts, developed based on community feedback, for the direction of the project," reported the City of Sarasota. Attendees will not just have the opportunity to look at project boards but to engage in discourse over the intricate details, getting a clear understanding of what each proposal entails—bringing the collective vision for the greenway a step closer to reality.
