Seattle families in need of a financial boost for child care expenses have some good news coming their way. The Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) has announced an expansion of the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), opening doors for more families to alleviate the heavy burden of childcare costs. Eligible residents can now apply through Department of Education and Early Learning's online portal.

Under the CCAP initiative, qualifying Seattle families with kids between one month and 12 years can now save an average of $7,500 annually on child care. Subsidies are tailored for each family, based on the child’s age, hours of care needed, family size, and income; this criteria has provided a financial lifeline for many, especially since the cost of child care has often been prohibitive for families struggling to stay afloat.

To tap into the CCAP, families need to reside within Seattle city limits, have an income that falls below 94% of the State Median Income (SMI), and cannot be eligible for other child care subsidy programs. Applicants also need a justifiable need for child care—be it employment, education, or training commitments that seek child care services during specific hours. According to the Department of Education and Early Learning's announcement, these guidelines help ensure that assistance goes to those who need it most.

This effort by the city to support families in managing the high costs associated with child care is more than just financial relief; it’s empowerment for parents to pursue work and education, knowing their children are in safe hands. This move serves as an acknowledgment of the diverse and often challenging schedules of Seattle's working parents.
