A 21-year-old man from Shelby Township has been charged with multiple felonies after a shooting incident at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital that sent the facility into lockdown and raised alarms across Oakland County businesses and schools last week. The suspect, Robert Paljusevic, allegedly fired seven shots at his 25-year-old former friend in the hospital's parking deck after a falling out over not being invited to a private funeral viewing for the victim's father. The victim was hit in his arm and shoulder but is expected to recover. As noted by Audacy, Paljusevic faces charges of Assault with Intent to Murder, which carries a potential life sentence if convicted, as well as Felony Firearm, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
At the arraignment held virtually yesterday, Click on Detroit reported that the Oakland County Jail would continue to hold Paljusevic without bond. The tension between the two men reportedly escalated after Paljusevic was excluded from the intimate family gathering to mourn the victim's father and further intensified during a disturbing FaceTime call where Paljusevic allegedly defiled funeral brochures. "If I do see you outside in public, don’t be surprised if something happens," Paljusevic allegedly threatened, a comment detectives learned about during subsequent interviews.
During the investigation, the Troy Police Department uncovered Paljusevic's apparent volatile temperament and his past friendship with the victim. The victim's mother described Paljusevic as "highly possessive" of her son and recounted an offensive comment he made at the public viewing of the victim’s father, as Detective Carlo Pizzorni related to the court, according to Click on Detroit. Coworkers also characterized the suspect as "very patriotic for Albania" and "argumentative."
In their investigation of the crime scene, police found multiple bullet casings and a blood trail leading towards the hospital entrance. The suspect was later apprehended at his residence due to surveillance footage from the area. No further fatalities or injuries were reported in the aftermath of the incident, though the emotional and communal toll of the event was underscored by Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald's statement emphasizing the seriousness of workplace violence and its impact on the community.
Paljusevic maintains his innocence, waiving a formal reading of the charges and standing mute in court. As a result, pleas of not guilty were entered on his behalf. The suspect's next court appearance is scheduled for March 31, at which time further proceedings in this case will continue to unfold. Paljusevic's public defender mentioned that the accused, who had been employed with the hospital for about two years, has no significant prior criminal history, save for a previous public intoxication incident.
