This Friday, Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles will celebrate Women's History Month with her third annual event, "Moving Forward Together – Women Educating and Inspiring Generations." The event will take place in Silver Spring, Maryland, from 9 a.m. to noon, with doors opening at 8:30 a.m. for networking over a light breakfast. Sayles, who represents Montgomery County as an At-Large Councilmember, aims to highlight the mentorship and leadership of women shaping the future, as per the Montgomery County release.
The event will be held at the Silver Spring Civic Center, and this year’s speakers include U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks. Senator Alsobrooks has a career focused on serving Maryland, reflecting the essence of Women's History Month. Councilmember Sayles said, "By creating mentorship and professional development opportunities for women and girls, we amplify underrepresented voices, empower women to confidently claim their space, and nurture an inclusive, collaborative community," according to the same release.
Senator Alsobrooks, known for her advocacy on equity and economic empowerment, will discuss her vision for Maryland's future, aligning with the event's focus on celebrating the role of women in shaping a better tomorrow. Other speakers include Council President Kate Stewart and Amanda Whitener, Executive Director of Woman to Woman Mentoring, who will contribute to discussions on mentorship and professional growth.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with county leaders and participate in a mentorship-matching experience designed to support networking and career development. The event will also feature the Montgomery County Commission for Women's 2024 Girl Power Contest winner (elementary division), Summer Zhong, who will represent the new generation. Participants can register online, and press members who wish to cover the event must register separately. For more information, the press release directs inquiries to Heather Mahoney.
