Six individuals were left grappling with injuries after a flame-ravaged home in South Jamaica, Queens, demanded a dramatic response from local firefighting units yesterday. As reported by ABC7NY, the fire department was summoned to a residence on 146 Street, where they toiled through the blaze, which took a strenuous couple of hours to subdue.
Amidst the chaos, according to a dispatch from PIX11, three firefighters sustained minor injuries during the ordeal but are expected to make a full recovery. Civilians fared worse, with two encountering minor injuries, and one more suffering a critical state. All affected were transported to nearby hospitals to receive care.
The FDNY reported that the blaze, which ignited a response from 33 units comprising a three-alarm fire team, was reported at approximately 10:51 a.m. Firefighters faced a duel with windy conditions, which exacerbated the severity of the fire by spreading it to adjacent structures, ultimately bringing it to heel shortly past noon.
While the subsequent investigation into the origin of the fire continues, officials have noted that a lithium-ion battery was found onsite, as well as an e-bike and propane tanks. Remarkably, despite the presence of these potential accelerants, officials confirmed that the tanks did not explode. Yet neither the battery nor any other items have been definitively pointed to as the cause at this stage.
