South Milwaukee is prepping for a fresh phase in its economic development narrative, as city officials green-light a $3.2 million redevelopment initiative aimed at converting a once-vacant lot into a modern residential hub. The project, focusing on the property at 100 15th Avenue—the corner of College and 15th Avenues—plans to morph the site of a former medical clinic inactive since 2018 into 20 market-rate apartments.
The development is mapped out to feature 16 two-bedroom units along with four studio units, constituting a blend designed to cater to a diverse range of needs in the local housing market. Standing vacant since its former medical occupants left, the site is being revitalized in partnership with Khalek Building Services, Scott Crawford, Inc., and the Bucyrus Foundation, a move the mayor of South Milwaukee, Jim Shelenske, has praised, stating in a statement obtained by southmilwaukee.gov, "This project is a win for South Milwaukee and the Bucyrus Foundation, transforming an underutilized site into a modern residential property that will contribute to our ongoing economic development and redevelopment momentum."
In an effort to back the project financially, the city, via the Bucyrus Foundation, is injecting a $100,000 loan with expectations it will circulate back into the community's redevelopment chest by 2029. According to a statement obtained by southmilwaukee.gov, Mohamad Khalek, Executive President of Khalek Building Services, expressed enthusiasm about the project, detailing, "This project not only creates quality housing but also supports local economic growth. I'm excited to see this redevelopment bring new life to South Milwaukee."
Construction by Khalek Building Services and Scott Crawford, Inc. is slated to commence in April 2025 with the projection of wrapping up within a year.
