A shooting at Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan has resulted in one victim being hospitalized and a suspect in custody. The incident was reported earlier today and the hospital was placed on lockdown as police responded to reports of an active shooter. The suspect, now apprehended by the Troy Police Department, was an employee of the hospital, as was the victim in this incident.
The shooting occurred just before 7:10 a.m. in the hospital's parking garage. Lt. Ben Hancock of the Troy Police Department stated that the suspect fired a handgun five times, hitting the victim, a 25-year-old man from Troy, twice in the arm. A vehicle was also struck during the event. In a statement obtained by WOODTV, the victim is reportedly last listed in stable condition. Details from the department further indicate that the victim knew the suspect's identity.
While a motive has not been clearly identified, Lt. Hancock referred to the event as a "targeted attack," as per ABC30. The shooter is believed to have been wearing scrubs at the time of the incident, blending in with individuals who were attending to the sick and injured until they were located and apprehended. Witnesses at the scene were instructed to hide for their safety, and employees received an internal message notifying them of an active shooter and advising them to take necessary precautions.
Following the attack, Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital initiated a lockdown, advising scheduled patients not to arrive and to call their respective departments directly for assistance. "One victim is in the emergency department for medical treatment," Corewell Health communicated in a statement to ABC30, confirming the ongoing treatment of the victim. The hospital began to resume normal operations following the capture of the suspect.
The police response included multiple law enforcement agencies, and before the suspect could be taken into custody, the area was extensively searched using dogs, drones, and a helicopter. Lt. Hancock assured hospital staff through a public message, "We're there. We are on scene. We are doing our best to keep you safe," as reported by WOODTV. The suspect's identity has not been released to the public as authorities continue their investigation into the shooting and its circumstances.
