Two suspects are in custody following an ATM theft in Northwest Washington. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is investigating the incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning. Officers responded to a call around 5:17 a.m. on the 5200 block of Georgia Avenue, where multiple suspects allegedly threatened an employee and stole an ATM by chaining it to their vehicle.
The suspects, 33-year-old Justin Taylor from District Heights, Maryland, and 39-year-old Hosea Peterson from Southeast, were quickly arrested after a high-speed chase through Maryland and Virginia. MPD’s Falcon 1 helicopter helped locate the suspects' white Ford F-250 pickup truck near New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road. The chase ended when the suspects fled on foot in the 2300 block of Raynolds Place, Southeast.
Both Taylor and Peterson face charges of Theft I, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and Felony Receiving Stolen Property. Peterson also faces charges for Reckless Driving, Leaving After Colliding, Fleeing from Law Enforcement, and Assault on a Police Officer. The stolen ATM and the vehicle, which had been reported stolen in Montgomery County earlier, were recovered.
Authorities are investigating whether Taylor and Peterson are linked to other similar crimes in the region. Two other suspects related to the case remain at large. Metropolitan Police Department encourages anyone with information to call (202) 727-9099 or send a tip to 50411. A reward of up to $1,000 is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this and other crimes in the area.
