Two men connected to a 2023 fatal shooting at a D.C. hookah lounge have been ordered to remain behind bars, without the possibility of bond. Cotey Wynn, 44, and Antwan Shelton, 41, are both facing first-degree murder charges in the death of former Morgan State University basketball player Blake Bozeman. Bozeman was shot and killed during an incident that also injured three others at the CRU Hookah Lounge on H Street, as reported by FOX 5.
At a superior court hearing on Saturday, evidence including security footage and cell phone data was presented, attempting to place Wynn and Shelton at the scene of the crime. These details were shared in court documents obtained by WUSA9. The decision to hold both men without bond reflects the gravity of the charges they are facing. Shock has pervaded the D.C. community since Bozeman, who played for Morgan State under his father, coach Todd Bozeman, was not only known for his athletic prowess but also for his role as a family man and a mentor for young athletes through his non-profit organization 'The Pivot Group'.
Remembered as a prominent figure in the community, Bozeman's death prompted a moment of silence at a charity basketball event, as stated by a WUSA9 interview. In addition to his sporting accomplishments, he was also a real estate agent and a father of three, leaving behind a wife and children. Bozeman's impact on the community was such that the "Gun Violence Awareness Night" held in his honor contributed funds to the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative, supporting families in Ward 8.
Adding to the complexity of the case, Wynn had been a violence interrupter for the District of Columbia's Attorney General's "Cure the Streets" program, aiming to reduce gun violence. His earlier statements on turning away from a life of violence, captured by WUSA9, now stand in stark contrast to the charges he is facing. Following the arrests, Todd Bozeman, in an interview with NBC Washington, lamented the untimely loss of his son, stating, "Some people say he finished the race, but he really didn't finish the race because he didn’t get his kids through."
The Office of the Attorney General expressed their dismay at the allegations against Wynn, affirming that they had "no knowledge of Cotey's potential involvement in any events related to his arrest," according to a statement to NBC Washington. The next court appearance for both Wynn and Shelton is scheduled for April 1.
