The City of Tampa announced that the pre-application window for its Homeowner Disaster Assistance Program will close this Sunday, March 30, at 5 p.m. EST, providing critical support in the form of mortgage, insurance deductible, and repair cost assistance to eligible residents affected by calamities. Following the program's launch last Monday, Close to 2,000 households have thrown their hats into the ring, with over 1,000 completing the necessary pre-application steps, as Tampa.gov reports.
It seems, according to the recent count, that citizens are heeding the call to action. Abbye Feeley, the City's Administrator for Development and Economic Opportunity, indicated the importance of wrapping up the pre-application process promptly. "We want to encourage homeowners who have initiated the process but have not completed their pre-application, to do so over these next three days," Abbye Feeley told Tampa.gov. Feeley also warned that incomplete pre-applications could result in ineligibility for the program.
The assistance program, established in the wake of devastating events, offers three categories of financial aid. Homeowners can apply for Insurance Deductible Assistance up to $10,000, Mortgage Assistance up to $5,000, and Cost of Repair Assistance up to $20,000. The total state funds allocated for the City of Tampa's distribution to its residents who are eligible based on income and residency requirements sum up to $3.2 million. Residents applying beyond the set deadline will have to face their applications ineligible, in a race against time to distribute urgently needed financial support.
Those interested and qualifying as income-eligible — defined as earning 140% of the Area Median Income or below and residing within city limits — have until the weekend's end to stake their claim. While beneficiaries may apply for one or all of the assistance types, the City stipulates a reimbursement cap of $20,000 per household, making strategic decision-making a critical factor.
