Efficiency isn't always the most lauded trait in politics, but it can hold significant sway in getting things done in Congress. Case in point, Tennessee's own Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen has just ranked as the fifth most effective Democratic lawmaker in a recent report by the Center for Effective Lawmaking. The Center, led by Craig Volden from the University of Virginia and Alan Wiseman of Vanderbilt University, dissected the legislative work of our nation's lawmakers and found Cohen standing tall among his Democrat peers.
Known for his liberal voting patterns, Congressman Cohen has made a name for himself not just in casting votes but in crafting bills that move and progress through the swampy grounds of Capitol Hill. Named effective in a Congress where his party hunkers down in the minority, the achievement speaks volumes. Cohen has managed to stay the course in navigating the confounding maze of contemporary American governance, where a bipartisan handshake is as rare as a quiet moment on the House floor.
“I am honored to be recognized for being an effective lawmaker, which has been my firm intention throughout my career in public office," Congressman Cohen said, according to his official website. He added, “Serving in the minority in the 118th Congress posed challenges to reaching the kinds of bipartisan consensus that result in successful legislation, and I’m pleased to see that objective academic experts see that I was able to do that.”
