Customs and Border Protection officers at the Anzalduas International Bridge recently took into custody a Texas man wanted on felony charges. Javier Antonio Calvillo was apprehended last Sunday, following an alert during a routine screening process. According to CBP's press release, Calvillo, a 32-year-old Pharr, TX resident, was attempting to cross from Mexico into the United States when he was flagged as a potential match for an outstanding warrant.
Officials at the border were quick to securely take Calvillo into custody even before confirming his identity. In secondary inspection, officers were able to employ biometric verification to definitively ascertain that Calvillo was indeed the person named in the active arrest warrant from the Mission Police Department. The warrant was in connection with charges of sexual assault, a second-degree felony in the State of Texas. "CBP screens all travelers entering the United States. We are committed to bringing in those individuals with outstanding arrest warrants to face their criminal charges," Port Director Carlos Rodriguez said, as per the CBP's press release.
The news of the arrest was swiftly followed by local law enforcement action. A Mission police officer arrived to take Calvillo into custody, transporting him to the Mission city jail as part of the due process. It is of note that criminal charges are merely allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The agency has highlighted its dedication to its Immigration Inspection Program, information about which can be found on CBP's website.
