Rep. Mike Thompson has just announced Thea Hensel as Sonoma County Woman of the Year for 2025, recognizing her extensive contributions to the community, particularly in environmental advocacy. Hensel, known for her role in co-founding the Santa Rosa Southeast Greenway, has been instrumental in transforming 49 acres of former Caltrans land into a dynamic public space slated to enrich Santa Rosa.

As per Thompson's office, he praised Hensel's commitment: "Thea Hensel exemplifies the spirit of civic leadership and environmental advocacy." Her project is about creating and preserving community gardens, parks, habitats, and creeks, with the groundbreaking event around the corner a testament to her 15-year grassroots campaign.

The annual Woman of the Year Recognition Ceremony, held in honor of Women’s History Month, began in California's Fourth District. It initially started as a local initiative in 1978 to align with International Women’s Day, and through the efforts of various advocacy groups, including the National Women’s History Project, it evolved into a nationally recognized celebration. Thompson's office noted, "Every year since, Women’s History Month has been recognized in March to uplift and celebrate the incredible contributions and accomplishments of American women."

Other 2025 honorees include Wilda Shock of Lake County, Norma Ferriz de Massaro representing Napa County, Lisa Hilas from Solano County, and Mary Yin Liu for Yolo County.
