A suspected scheme to defraud buyers by tampering with vehicle odometers has surfaced in Waukesha County, implicating three individuals in a fraudulent practice that has long plagued the used car market. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), three Brookfield residents, Marvin Reed Trotter, 53, Nycole Cavins, 55, and Marvel S. Trotter, 27, face accusations of orchestrating a deceitful operation to manipulate the mileage readings on vehicles and reselling them with fraudulent odometer readings, as reported by FOX 6 Now.
Investigators discovered a trail of 70 vehicles with altered odometers, all linked to the accused, who reportedly removed around 4.5 million miles of vehicle history, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The three individuals, who owned an autobody shop in Butler, purchased used vehicles through Facebook Marketplace, often in need of repairs. They would then roll back the odometers and alter the titles before reselling the cars on the same marketplace at higher prices. The case began in 2022 after a buyer suspected odometer fraud when he bought a 2008 Jeep Cherokee for $6,900, which had a reported mileage of 107,000 miles, but a vehicle history report showed it had over 172,500 miles., as noted by GMToday's The Freeman.
The ramifications of these alleged actions extend into the legal sphere with Marshall Trotter facing additional charges due to being a felon in possession of a firearm. All three suspects have been slapped with multiple counts of theft by false representation, while a warrant remains outstanding for the third suspect, Marvel Trotter. Marvin Trotter and Nycole Cavins have since been released on a $250,000 signature bond each and are scheduled to face another legal hurdle with preliminary hearings on April 14 at 9:15 am, as per GMToday's The Freeman.
