
DC police have apprehended two individuals following a shooting incident in Eckington, relying on surveillance footage to crack the case. The incident took place on Thursday, February 27, when at around 1:51 p.m., police were alerted to the sound of gunshots on the 1700 block of 3rd Street, Northeast. While no victims were found, officers did discover signs of a shooting and damage to nearby property.
The investigation, which involved a thorough review of surveillance video, revealed that multiple suspects emerged from behind a residence, brandishing guns and firing toward a moving vehicle that managed to escape the scene before the authorities arrived, and then the suspects retreated into the same home. The Metropolitan Police Department reported that the suspects were later located and taken into custody without further incident, leading to the recovery of four handguns, one of which was equipped with an illegal auto sear switch converting it into a machine pistol.
The individuals arrested included a 16-year-old male from Northeast and 18-year-old Andre Chillous from Northwest, D.C. They face a spate of charges, such as Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (gun), Endangerment with a Firearm, Destruction of Property, Carrying a Pistol Without a License, and Unlawful Possession of a Machine Gun.
Authorities have emphasized the value of surveillance technology in addressing and responding to crime within the city, noting the integral role it played in identifying and apprehending the suspects connected to this latest act of violence, a development that highlights the increasingly visible presence of firearms in community conflicts and the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining public safety amidst a landscape often marked by such spontaneous eruptions of danger and destruction.
