Harris County witnessed a concerning trend over the weekend as two separate drunk driving incidents resulted in crashes involving county patrol vehicles. According to a report by Click2Houston, the first incident occurred last night when a Jeep collided with a Precinct 5 deputy's patrol car on the southbound lanes of West Sam Houston Tollway at Bissonnet. Fortunately, the patrol car was unoccupied at the time. The deputy was not in the vehicle, and the driver of the Jeep was arrested after displaying signs of intoxication.
Later the same evening, a Precinct 3 patrol car engaged in a traffic stop was struck from behind on East Sam Houston Tollway by another driver, who was seriously injured, airlifted to a hospital, and later charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in addition to drunk driving; the deputy involved sustained minor injuries but was treated at a hospital, all this while Precinct 5 Constable Terry Allbritton confirmed their office would lead both cases.
In response to the reckless actions leading to these incidents, Constable Allbritton emphasized the perils of drinking and driving. "Drinking and driving is a deadly choice," he stated in a Facebook post. He highlighted the dangers such as impaired judgment, slower reaction times, and deprived coordination, urging the public to make safer transportation choices and reminding them of the sobering statistics and fatalities associated with drunk driving accidents.
