A United Airlines flight en route from Los Angeles International Airport to Shanghai was forced to turn back this past Saturday due to an oversight by one of the crew members. As reported by ABC7, the pilot of flight 198 realized two hours into the journey that they had left their passport behind, a necessary document for entry into China.

The oversight led the Boeing 787 jetliner, which held 257 passengers and 13 crew, to land at San Francisco International around 5:00 p.m. Passengers experienced extended travel time and, following United's statement obtained by NBC Los Angeles, were provided with meal vouchers and compensation for their trouble. A new crew was arranged, taking off a few hours later to continue the flight to its intended destination.

Per CNN, passengers were understandably frustrated, with some expressing their outrage on RedNote, China’s social media platform akin to Instagram. A popular post from a Chinese passenger, which garnered over 10,000 likes, read, "How could someone mess up this badly at work?" Meanwhile, Yang Shuhan, another passenger on the flight, noted the honesty of the pilot and appreciated the transparency despite the disruption.

The pilot's mishap also impacted the returning flight, UA 199 from Shanghai to Los Angeles, which was delayed for about six hours. This forced passengers to alter their plans, including a Shanghai-based business traveler who, in a statement to CNN, expressed their frustration after having to reschedule their Monday commitments. While United Airlines is known to fly 140 million passengers annually, Shukor Yusof, founder of Endau Analytics, described the mistake as "unacceptable" for a major airline and indicative of a "lack of discipline."

In addition to providing financial compensation, United assured affected customers that they would receive a response to their claims within 14 business days. The flight eventually landed in Shanghai, six hours behind its scheduled time, and the airline has yet to publicly address the protocols that will be followed to prevent similar issues in the future.
