Wake County Sheriff's Department has apprehended a man on charges of possessing weapons of mass destruction after a disturbance involving gunfire in a residential neighborhood. In a post on their official social media, the Sheriff's Office detailed the arrest of 43-year-old Aaron Martin Deuel, who was initially reported to be discharging a firearm in public. Deuel was taken into custody on Sunday evening , following the report of shots fired on the 3200 block of Banks Road. Wake County Sheriff's Office stated that he has been charged with several offenses, including felony possession of methamphetamine and violating a local ordinance.
Subsequent to his arrest, law enforcement secured a search warrant and conducted a thorough sweep of Deuel's property, which reportedly turned up additional illegal substances, and disturbingly, bomb-making materials alongside what was identified as a metal pipe bomb. The State Bureau of Investigation's bomb squad was brought in to manage the potential explosives, which they did without incident, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office. Wrapped up in gunfire, Deuel's property revealed a darker underside where tools for potential mass destruction sat alongside controlled substances.
In response to the findings, the Wake County Sheriff's Office has since leveled more serious charges against Deuel. On March 24, one day after his arrest, Deuel faced two counts of felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction among additional drug-related charges. Explaining the thorough response, Sheriff Willie Rowe was quoted, "Thanks to the thorough work of our deputies, investigators, and the SBI, we were able to contain the threat and prevent any further risk to the community. While what was reported as gunfire led to the discovery of dangerous weapons and illegal drugs, we will continue to take necessary steps to help safeguard our residents."
