Wake County folks, brace yourselves for smoother drives and less pothole dodging in the not-too-distant future. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has cracked open its wallet and dished out $4.1 million to the Fred Smith Company, targeting an extensive roadwork project that will span upwards of 8 miles. Goodbye, patchy tarmac.
According to the NCDOT, April is slated to be the starting block for these much-anticipated improvements, aiming to wrap up by fall 2026. With a laundry list of roads—including slices of Six Forks Road, Pinecrest Road, and Lynn Road—on the revamp radar, daily commutes might be a hassle with the orange cones out, but it's the light at the end of the traffic-laden tunnel.
The nitty-gritty of the plan involves a milling, resurfacing, and shoulder reconstruction medley. Specifically, the segments on Six Forks Road from Strickland Road to Lynn Road, and between Pleasant Union Church Road and Possum Track Road, are on the docket. Also waiting to shed their worn-out skins are Pinecrest Road stretching from Fairbanks Drive to Glenwood Avenue and Lynn Road that is sandwiched between Six Forks and Lead Mine Road. Plus, a couple more secondary roads are set to receive a facelift as the cherry on top.
