The citizens of Wake Forest are being nudged into greener pastures as the time for loose leaf collection draws to a close this Friday. In a shift towards more sustainable waste management practices, the Town of Wake Forest has announced that starting next Monday, the collection of yard waste will strictly require the use of compostable paper yard waste bags or reusable containers that should not exceed 50 pounds in weight. This change is in response to ongoing environmental concerns and aims to reduce the amount of plastic entering landfills and ecosystems.
As per the Town of Wake Forest's official statement, the Public Works department has declared they will not choose to accept yard waste in plastic bags from the aforementioned date. Residents are further advised against using Town-issued rollout trash or recycling carts for yard waste disposal. Other materials such as trash, rocks, dirt, mulch, or various debris are also not to be mixed in with the yard waste. The borough's statement delineates that these practices are an essential part of their efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable environment.
To facilitate this transition, Waketonians must continue to ensure their yard waste is placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on their designated collection day. It is imperative that this detritus is set apart from obstacles such as fences, utility poles, and cars, to avoid any potential collection mishaps. Residents needing to purchase paper yard bags or reusable containers can find these necessities at local discount, hardware, and home improvement stores.
The move represents a definite shift towards embracing eco-friendly practices within community waste management. To further encourage recycling, the Town of Wake Forest is offering an option for residents to upgrade from a 48-gallon to a 96-gallon recycle cart and is even providing an opportunity to obtain a dedicated yard waste cart.
