Washington D.C.'s efforts to tackle gun violence led to another significant legal proceeding this week, as 20-year-old Kelon Von Dukes has been indicted on charges related to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. This indictment, unsealed in federal court, marks yet another case under the "Make D.C. Safe Again" initiative, a program designed specifically to address the district's ongoing battle with gun-related crimes.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, on March 1, Dukes was apprehended by the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District Special Missions Unit. Officers were reportedly on routine patrol when they allegedly witnessed Dukes standing near a gas station, engaging in what appeared to quickly discard a marijuana cigarette and a black bag upon noticing law enforcement.
During the ensuing foot chase and apprehension of Dukes, officers claim to have discovered an L-shaped object within his pocket, which turned out to be a loaded semi-automatic pistol, previously reported as stolen. These findings come as part of a statement announced by U.S. Attorney Edward Martin Jr., Chief Pamela Smith of the MPD, and Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the ATF.
Dukes, who has two prior felony convictions for carrying a pistol without a license and was on supervised probation at the time, was subsequently ordered to be detained pending trial by Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey last Tuesday. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle McWaters, as part of an intensified effort to to effectively reduce gun violence within the nation's capital.
It's essential to note that an indictment is not a conviction. As the U.S. Attorney's Office reminds the public, "All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
