The first green buds of the Yoshino cherry trees have appeared at Washington D.C.'s Tidal Basin, marking the start of the bloom season, according to the National Park Service. FOX 5 DC reports that these buds are the first of six stages leading to the peak bloom, when 70% of the cherry blossoms are expected to open. National Park Service forecasts this year's peak bloom could occur between March 28 and March 31.
Temperatures initially reached 70 degrees, but cooler weather is expected. This change in weather may affect the blooming cycle. Last year, the second stage took three days to arrive, while it typically takes about a week. This pattern is based on National Park Service data, as per NBC Washington.
The 2025 National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. will be held from March 20 to April 13, featuring events and celebrations as the cherry trees bloom at the Tidal Basin. The trees last reached peak bloom on March 17 in 2024, as mentioned by WJLA. The start of blooming has varied in the past, with 2015 having a later start on March 18. The blooming process, from green buds to full bloom, is monitored by the National Park Service and cherry blossom enthusiasts. Weather will impact the timing of the bloom.
