West Allis is gearing up for an event that promises both fun and education for its younger residents. The West Allis Bike Rodeo, an afternoon dedicated to bicycle safety and skills for children, is set to take place on May 18 at the West Allis Farmers Market. Partnering with the Southwest Suburban Health Department and the Liberty Heights Park Neighborhood Association, the event encourages safe cycling habits through hands-on activities, according to the City of West Allis.
Slated to run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the rodeo is asking participants to check in by noon to take advantage of the full schedule. Activities include bike safety checks, free helmets while supplies last, and a series of seven skill courses designed to educate and entertain riders aged 4-14. But it's not just about learning; the event also features helmet fitting and decorating, as well as lunch for all who partake.
Registration for the event is mandatory, and those interested can sign up on the Southwest Suburban Health Department's website. The Bike Rodeo isn't just a solo effort; it's backed by several local sponsors, including Pepsi, Festival Foods, and Mountain Mike's Pizza, alongside vital support from the West Allis Police Department, reflecting a community's commitment to its youngest members.
Other than fun and food, the rodeo also offers a chance to win prizes through a raffle, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day's proceedings. Parents can also rest assured knowing that their children's bicycle helmets are not just decorative but properly fitted—a crucial aspect of cycling safety often overlooked. As appreciation for their support, the event highlights notable sponsors such as Portillos, West Allis Heating and Cooling, and notably, the West Allis Police Department, who play a role in the day-to-day safety within the community.
