A Wilson resident faces serious charges after an arrest concerning insurance fraud earlier this week. Dewanda A. Battle, aged 49, of 3718 Lear Court, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, as announced by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey. Allegations brought forth by Special agents within the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division involve Battle trying to misleadingly claim $4,001.68 from Progressive Premier Insurance Co. of Illinois.
The incident in question dates back to September 30 of last year, when Battle allegedly provided an incorrect date of when her car was damaged to progress a claim. Wilson police arrested Battle on March 12, and she was subsequently placed on a $20,000 secured bond. Information from the North Carolina Department of Insurance shows that she was scheduled to make her first court appearance in Wilson County District Court on March 14.
While addressing the issue, Commissioner Causey stressed the broader implications of such fraudulent activities. "Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," he was quoted as saying. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums," as per the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
The Commissioner has called upon North Carolinians to actively assist in keeping insurance premiums lower by reporting suspicions of fraud. The anonymous tip line maintained by the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division stands to readily accept such reports, which can be made over the phone. If you suspect insurance fraud or white-collar crimes, the department strongly suggests to quickly report it by calling 919-807-6840 or, for those within North Carolina, toll free at 888-680-7684.
