An alarming incident unfolded at Alderwood Middle School in Lynnwood last Friday when an 11-year-old boy, a former student of the Edmonds School District, attempted to stab another student on campus, this according to Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies, who mentioned no students were injured thanks to a quick-intervening teacher, HeraldNet reports.

Following the attempted assault, which took place around 1:30 p.m., the young assailant fled the scene and has since remained at large, prompting ongoing efforts by authorities to locate him, deputies are actively searching for the child and are on the lookout, with FOX 13 Seattle noting the suspect had moved to a different school district after leaving the school where the incident occurred.

The school district relayed to concerned parents and community members that the safety and well-being of their students is a top priority, "We understand that incidents like this are deeply concerning, and we are grateful for the swift response by our staff and local law enforcement," stated the Edmonds School District according to an email obtained by FOX 13 Seattle; despite the troubling event, authorities have indicated there is no continuing threat to the school community.

Residents in Lynnwood have expressed shock and concern over the incident, with local Levi Maritz telling KIRO7, "This is so tragic you know it’s like I could never fathom an 11-year-old boy doing that to another student," and questioning the safety measures in place as “Being such a young age how could the school let that happen, you know? I just feel like the students are at a risk when there’s no one protecting them.”
