A 12-year-old boy was airlifted to a trauma center after an incident at Cocoa Beach, initially suspected to be a shark bite, turned out to be caused by a surfboard, as per updates from Brevard County Fire Rescue. The emergency services had responded to a call on Sunday afternoon in the 2000 block of East Cocoa Beach Causeway, with the first reports indicating the victim was bitten, something which was later clarified to be a surfboard injury, as WESH reported.
Upon arrival at the scene, lifeguards pulled the boy from the water and applied a life-saving tourniquet. The victim had suffered a deep laceration to his knee from the fin of his surfboard. However, in the whirl of panic and rescue, it was easy to mistake the injury for a predatory strike, which is what might have led to the initial confusion.
After receiving immediate on-site attention, the boy was air-lifted and transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for emergency care, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries. This clarification revised the previous apprehension of wildlife danger along the shores, a narrative noted by ClickOrlando postulating an attack by a marine animal.
Local authorities are underway to investigate the incident further. However, the initial trauma alert and subsequent emergency response highlight the readiness of Brevard County's safety personnel to act swiftly in the face of potential danger.
