A 15-year-old student from John Paul Stevens High School was taken to University Hospital after a stabbing during a fight near the school. The altercation happened on Monday around 1:00 p.m. at 9865 Potranco Road, near a gas station. Officers were called to the scene for a "cutting in progress" and detained one potential suspect for questioning, believing the individuals involved were students from the nearby high school, according to FOX San Antonio.
Officers responded to a field near Stevens High School after finding an injured student, while a second student received a minor wound and was treated by the school nurse. The incident follows ongoing lunchtime fights, as reported by KENS 5. A district official confirmed the school was placed on lockdown after the off-campus altercation. Cynthia Zarate, a parent, stated, "This is not the first time they come here. The kids come (to) fight. It's always. Every day." The incident raises questions about the school's open campus policy during lunch, with police clarifying that students must meet specific criteria to leave the property.
Richard Skidd raised concerns about student supervision off-campus, asking, "Who's watching them? Who knows where they're going? Who knows what they're doing? Nobody." Parent Zarate, who has reported similar issues in the past, stated, "We need to do something for the kids. I report (it) and they say the vice principal and the principal, they say 'We can't do anything.'" The Northside Independent School District assigns two police officers to each high school campus, as mentioned by KENS 5.
