
An 18-year-old man, identified as Charles Shanklin, has died following a shooting yesterday afternoon inside the Shaker Heights Public Library, as reported by Cleveland19. Police received a call about the incident around 4:45 p.m. and arrived to find Shanklin injured. Despite immediate CPR and subsequent transport to University Hospitals, Shanklin succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that they have taken one person of interest into custody related to the shooting. However, the identity of this individual has not been disclosed, according to a statement obtained by News 5 Cleveland. There were no other reported injuries that took place at the library located at 16500 Van Aken Blvd.
In response to the event, the Shaker Heights City School District released a notification on its website stating that classes at Shaker Heights High School and the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning would be canceled today as the district maneuvers through the aftermath of what has transpired. The district also noted that students enrolled in CTE programs will not report to their off-campus sites, with all other district buildings remaining open, according to information by FOX8.
The community's reaction to the shooting has been one of shock and concern. Witnesses described the harrowing experience of seeking safety during the incident, "I grabbed my daughter and ran to the bathroom where everyone was running and I fell, and I braced her up under me (and) I got back up and we ran to the bathroom with the other eight people that was in there with us," Antwaun Teasley told News 5 Cleveland in an interview. Donald King, a resident, expressed concerns over safety and the presence of young people in the area, making it unsafe for community members to frequent.
Shaker Heights Police Chief Wayne Hudson addressed the public's concerns, reiterating the priority of safety within the community. "We are going to work as fast as we can as diligently as we can, but the overall safety of our community is our top priority," Hudson stated, as reported by News 5 Cleveland. Amidst the grief and chaos, the police assured that there is no current danger to Shaker Heights, and the library remains closed until further notice while the investigation continues.
