A cold case dating back to 1987 has been solved after recent DNA testing confirmed that the human remains found in Toledo, Ohio, were those of Tammy Lowe, an 18-year-old from Taylor, Michigan who had been missing. The Toledo Police Department released this information in a statement, "The Toledo Police Department is grateful to The Porchlight Project, Othram, Ohio BCI, Lucas County Cold Case Unit, and the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for their assistance in identifying Ms. Lowe," as reported by CBS News Detroit. The breakthrough came with the help of genetic testing funded by Porchlight Project, a nonprofit organization that stepped in to assist authorities in October 2024.
On June 16, 1987, the remains were located in an alley behind an auto repair shop near Interstate 75 and Collingwood Boulevard. Before they were discovered, the body, which had been burned and wrapped in a cloth, had been deceased for several days. Initially, the deceased was identified as a female between 16 and 21 years old, with physical details including strawberry-blonde hair and polished pink toenails, which failed to directly lead to her identification for decades. A detailed account by The Detroit News further stated that she was believed to be between 5 foot 4 inches and 5 foot 7 inches tall and weighed approximately 110 pounds, and she had small, round pearl earrings with five piercings in each ear.
The Toledo Police Department reached out to Porchlight Project for support. The organization agreed to finance DNA testing through Othram, a forensic analysis company based in Woodlands, Texas. The DNA testing conducted by Othram eventually led investigators to a possible relative residing in Michigan. Following up on this lead, detectives pinpointed family members in the vicinity of Detroit. A final DNA sample taken from a close relative, whose cooperation proved crucial in confirming the match, thus ending the search on March 20, as observed by ClickOnDetroit.
Authorities and the involved organizations have acknowledged the collaborative efforts that led to the identification of Tammy Lowe, addressing a long-standing question for her family and the community. The Toledo Police Department, The Porchlight Project, Othram, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Lucas County Cold Case Unit, and Lucas County Coroner's Office worked together to provide closure to a case that spanned nearly four decades, although the person responsible for Lowe's death remains unidentified.
