The City of Austin is adding new territory to its growing network of urban trails, directly benefiting students of Linder Elementary School. According to Austin Mobility News, the City Council recently greenlit a property purchase to the tune of $1.34 million covering 5.4 acres at Metcalfe Road and Burleson Road. The acquisition not only aims to enhance school travel routes but also facilitates greater connectivity to Mabel Davis Park and improves Country Club Creek's surface trail.
Financing the buy-in are multiple departments, including Parks and Recreation, Watershed Protection, Transportation and Public Works, and Austin Water. On top of this infrastructure development, the City also plans wastewater improvements at the council's Thursday meeting, introducing upgraded utilities and additional greenbelt spaces.
Tuesday's collaboration spotlighted what's revving up in the world of autonomous vehicles (AVs) within the city. With representatives from varying sectors—from government to private companies like Volkswagen, ADMT, Tesla, Waymo, and Zoox—a discussion unfolded around the integration and safety of autonomous transport on Austin's roads. Panels focused on pedestrian safety and a sustainable future for AVs, critical dialogues as the city pursues innovation. The city's AV Safety Working Group, in particular, plays a pivotal role, collaborating with companies to fine-tune operations and prepare for eventualities.
Equally pressing is the road safety campaign dubbed Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Shocking statistics reveal that driver distraction is responsible for a significant chunk of Austin's traffic accidents. Simple measures, such as the activation of the "do not disturb" feature on mobile phones while driving, are being encouraged in the quest to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and injuries. Meanwhile, residents should plan for road closures during the ABC Kite Fest and Statesman Cap10K during the weekend.
Lastly, Austin's Transportation and Public Works department celebrates the achievements and leadership of women in the team. Commending the likes of Maggie C., a Manager for the Capital Improvement Program, and Anna M., Assistant Director of the Engineering and Project Delivery Division, the city hails the impact they've had in pioneering space where women "feel celebrated and inspired by each other," as Maggie shared with Austin Mobility News. For those interested in the nitty-gritty of urban transportation details, upcoming meetings for the Urban Transportation and Pedestrian Advisory Councils are scheduled for early April.
