A kidnapping incident on a quiet Bethesda street escalated into a tense standoff last Friday, resulting in the arrest of a local man. According to WMAR2 News, Montgomery County Police were alerted to a kidnapping at around 2:30 p.m. in the 10300 block of Georgetown Road, where officers later observed the suspect driving with a woman in a red Toyota RAV4.
Driving a car identified as a red Toyota RAV4, officers followed the suspect to Rockledge Drive and I-270, where, jumping out of the moving car, the female victim managed to escape. She immediately confirmed to the police the identity of her abductor, 31-year-old Robert Deeter, whom she knew, and recounted how he had kidnapped her at gunpoint. This account comes from WUSA9, which also noted that the authorities did not clarify further details about the victim's relationship with Deeter.
The pursuit of Deeter continued to the vicinity of Old Georgetown Road and Beech Avenue. Here, in an act of defiance, Deeter barricaded himself inside his vehicle and refused to negotiate, thereby coaxing him out. WTOP reported that Montgomery County's Emergency Response Team was called to the scene and successfully negotiated Deeter's peaceful surrender after briefly blocking off the road during the standoff.
Following his surrender, the police found upon searching the vehicle a firearm inside the car. Deeter is now facing multiple charges, including first-degree assault, stalking, and harassment, not to mention kidnapping and various weapons charges. As a result of the incident and the charges laid against him, Deeter is being held without bond pending a bond hearing.
