The landscape of consumer advocacy in Michigan witnessed a significant change this week, as the Better Business Bureaus of Detroit, Eastern Michigan, and BBB of Western Michigan merged to form the Better Business Bureau of Michigan. Now ranking among the top tiers of the North American bureaus, this move aims to streamline services and intensify educational offerings across the state. Lisa Frohnapfel, ascending to helm the combined entity as President and CEO, expressed ambitions to "provide a more efficient and effective BBB experience for all of Michigan," according to a WHMI report.
In a move that is set to fundamentally change the organization's direction, the merger plans to not only maintain but expand the foundation's educational initiatives and business support services. "What is wonderful is this gives [local businesses] a great opportunity for expanded services, for a lot of educational opportunities that we have through our foundation," said Frohnapfel, as quoted by WZZM13. This consolidation also signals a commitment to bolster statewide support, enhance dispute resolution, and ramp up efforts against scams.
Despite the restructuring, both the Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids offices are slated to remain operational with no layoffs—ensuring that current staff can continue to offer their services. These branches historically worked closely with local business owners to provide training and management resources. This merger benefits local businesses and the roughly 10 million consumers within Michigan, a sentiment echoed by Frohnapfel in an interview with MidMichiganNow, where she noted, "Our goal is to provide a more efficient and effective BBB experience."
BBB of Michigan intends to support local businesses vigorously and teach consumers to avoid scams and dubious enterprises more effectively. According to Frohnapfel, as per WZZM13, the organization is "educational bound," with a mission firmly rooted in empowerment through education.
